Are Electronic Cigarettes Legal To Use On Airplanes?
May 26th, 2009 • Related • Filed Under
My husband & I are both heavy smokers but he’s WAY worse when it comes to flights. I can white knuckle it, he can’t. I would like to go back to Hawaii this Summer and I’m wondering if electronic or “smokeless” cigarettes are allowed on planes. Apparently it delivers nicotine without tobacco. It’s not ignited so there’s no danger there, and it doesn’t smell, so wouldn’t it makes sense that it would be legal? I can’t find info on it.

As far as an e-cig goes, you can smoke them where ever you want. They do not fall under any ban and as they are not a tobacco product, you should be fine for the reasons you suggested in your question. My philosophy is: If someone can use gum, the patch or the NRT inhaler in a public place, then I should be able to use my nicotine delivering device where I choose as well.
If you have some time before your trip, you will want to purchase your e-cig as soon as possible so you can get used to it. There is a “transition” period where you will want to “hide” your usage in public. Even though you aren’t doing anything wrong… you will become the center of everyone’s attention: smoker and non-smoker alike. You need to be able to sit on the plane and smoke confidently without any anxiety so when someone says something to you, and they will, you can handle it calmly.
Also, in-case you do run across someone who is unsure of your e-cig and makes you put it away, take a back up plan with you. Better to be safe than sorry.
We are currently in the process of changing ours from a red led light on the end to a blue light. According to the link in the previous answer, I would suggest changing the look since the airlines have an issue with it looking so much like a cigarette.

I got one a few weeks ago and my gf now lets me smoke in the house and in the car (and she has asthma). I asked if i could “smoke” at work and not go outside, but my boss said no because it looks too real. So if you try to use it on a plane they may ask you to put it away. I would suggest just going to the bathroom on the plane with ur e-cig and get ur fix where no one can see you. They will not know you even did it cause there is no smell or smoke.

I don’t think so. You could get some nicotine gum.

I would not openly use your e-cig on a plane…you don’t want anybody to see clouds of anything that resembles smoke coming from you post underwear bomber.
So, use your e-cig in the restroom. Or learn to hold the drag in longer, dilute it with a deeper inhale of air, and exhale downward. No vapor will be visible and you can do this in your seat.
