What Are You Doing In Regards To The Tobacco Industry’s Contribution To Poverty?
May 13th, 2009 • Related • Filed Under
We have heard that tobacco contributes greatly to poverty, particularly in third world countries and we want to focus some of our efforts to influence our federal government to put the pressure on big tobacco companies to make sure that they are not continuing to practice in the manner that creates unsafe living condtitions for people over the globe. What can we do on our end in working with you on this?

There are several industries that have much greater detrimental effects worldwide than the tobacco industry. The pharmaceutical industry comes to mind, and the petroleum industry whose profits are protected by military actions and which cause untold death and suffering. I’ll worry about the tobacco industry after they get closer to the top of the list.

It contributes to poverty because the government tax in developed countries is 1,000% on all tobacco.
It’s difficult for those people in third world countries to stop smoking as there is not much else enjoyment. On the other hand, siggies are very cheap in third world countries.
I’m glad I had to give it up. It saves me $8,760 every year

I’m lighting one up as soon as I finish this answer.
It’s not the tobacco industry that contributes to poverty, it’s the government that taxes tobacco so high.

Smoke good cigars. Oh, that’s not what you meant?

How exactly do they contribute to poverty in third world countries. If you don’t have the money to buy sigs then you stay without, don’t you. I smoke and love it. Could not give a tickey if i die tomorrow, if hospitals don’t want to help me that is too bad as well .

Just because you are poor doesn’t mean you smoke, lets talk about alcohol and drugs?
Comment by Bill on 13 May 2009:
I can continue not to smoke, just like I have for the past 39 years, 3 months, and 11 days.
Comment by BladeRun on 13 May 2009:
its odd u say that as everyones basically being forced to quit smoking, by the ban on smoking in public places etc so guess they wont be able to donate much money anymore.
Comment by Mel on 13 May 2009:

I don’t know.
Tobacco creates money for the economy, the government, and therefore the people. Of course, if the government is as stupid as, say, India (I’m not sure whether they sell tobacco or not) and spends money on atomic bombs while their people have the worst living conditions in the world, then it’s useless.
When ever I go to the city, I see homeless-looking people puffing on cigarettes. Couldn’t they be spending their well-begged money on food, a home, or better clothes?
Comment by Pelagius on 13 May 2009:
Basically, you want to ban USA companies from selling their product abroad. There is a thriving Chinese tobacco industry that will replace them. Most third world people can only afford the poisonous local tobacco (you will notice them begging a Marboro light from you when you travel).

if they are donating money what is wrong with that
