Cigarette Charger Damage Battery?

The guy at the cell-phone store said cigarette chargers are terrible for battery-operated portable electronic. His reasoning was as you accelerate/decelerate, the output current increase/decrease thus causing great damage to battery life. Anyone might have experimented or have insight knowledge into this?

  1. Automobile charging systems automatically regulate their voltages. And, while it’s true, they do fluctuate, they are moderated by the battery.
You might see voltages ranging from 12 volts to 15 volts. This is normal. And a good phone charger that plugs into the cigarette outlet are designed to reduce the voltage to the proper level for the device it is made for.
A cheap charger will damage the battery. But if you have a charger specifically designed for your device, and made by the same company, then there shouldn’t be any problems.

Additonal: I agree with friedach on the part with salesmen not knowing what they are talking about. Friedach, you came on a bit strong. The asker wasn’t asking if he had a “CRAPPY” car, and I think you owe him an apology. But essentially friedach is right about car regulators.

  2. crap on. it called a regulator, and all cars have one. the alternator charges at idle, and even to full rpm the alternator voltage does not rise, therefore the current from it does not increase. if not so, your car is cheap crap or worn out, because that’s the way it should be. i get very fed up with the educated ignorance of salesmen who have no technical understanding of what they say.
