I Own A 13 Year Old Peugeot 406. It’s Run Perfectly For The Last Few Years But About 6 Months Ago Went Wrong?
It started jolting when I was driving a long main roads and lost all acceleration. I would push on the acceleration pedal and nothing would happen then suddenly it would work and accelerate. The orange engine light always came on just before this. The gradually most of the electric parts of the car started breaking – clock light, cigarette lighter, electric window went slow then last week the headlights blew (still worked on main beam) and the radio cassette blew. It broke down totally and wouldn’t start again. Got it towed to a Peugeot garage. The charged me 460 euros (I live in Spain) to change the starter motor and two blown headlights and, having checked with the computer, said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the engine. I drove it home last night and nearly crashed as all the same things happened again on a windy dark rainy road in the countryside! Basically jolted, lost acceleration then lost all power. I’m now at a loss as to what to do! I’ve already spent more than the car is worth but am worried about driving a car that is clearly dangerous. Thanks! (PS the exhaust rattles and jolts too – car sounds great eh?!)

othergood answers, also try ,under bonnet, looking at engine heavy main wiring loom runs on left hand side of engine. loom sits on top of metal bracket @rocker cover. this is a very common place for the loom to chaff on the metal and cause shorting and various intermittent faults as the loom bounces around while driving

Yes as the other answerer said it sounds like the alternator current is not being regulated properly but as it,s an intermittent fault i would re-wire the alternator and check chassis -body earth connections.

Sorry to say that this is typical Peugeot electrics doing ‘their thing’. You will never set it right without totally rebuilding the entire electrical system. These cars are horrible, worthless hunks.

Sounds like the alternator is overcharging due to a faulty voltage regulator and tripping the protection on the ECU and other circuits
