Do Anti Oxidants Really Work?
The more that we learn about the science of anti aging, the more we realize the dangers of free radicals that the environment can damage our skin with. And while we understand what causes the damage and we have some methods, such as anti oxidants, to combat this damage, however how do we know if they are really being effective or not. Its great to say that there is an anti oxidant in a wrinkle cream or moisturizer, but how do you really know if it is working?Antioxidants while a very popular term within the anti aging industry, do not actually heal existing wrinkles. Anti oxidants are intended to protect your skin against the dangers of free radicals. A free radical is a molecule that has only one electron vs. the normal two. These molecules are constantly seeking out another electron. When they come in contact with one, even if it belongs to another molecule, it takes it, damaging the other molecule and triggering a cycle resulting in large amounts of cell damage. Anti oxidants are designed to stop this process. The issue becomes can it be stopped all together, or can it only be marginally disrupted? Many consumers are under the impression that anti oxidants remove wrinkles and are an important aspect or ingredients of the best wrinkle creams. That is not necessarily true. If a consumer is looking to eliminate existing wrinkles and wipe away fine lines, anti oxidants are not going to solve the problem alone. They may be used as a supplement to real wrinkle fighting ingredients, and certainly protecting your skin to whatever level anti oxidants do so is always a good idea. But as an anti aging ingredient all on its own, anti oxidants are not enough to be effective. There are some effective anti oxidants, not effective enough to be stand along anti wrinkle ingredients, but strong enough to impressively protect your skin against the damage of free radicals. Certain minerals have proven to be effective ingredients in anti aging products. Again without combining these ingredients with powerful anti wrinkle formulas like copper peptides and other polypeptides they will not remove existing wrinkles, however they are very good at shielding your skin from the damages of the environment. While there is no proven 100% accurate way to determine how effective anti oxidants are, scientists are able to judge which ones work the best. Scientists also recommend that people use anti oxidants despite the fact that none of them are 100% effective. It seems that while many anti oxidants do not work, or do not appear to work, and others are moderately effective, scientists agree that it is better to try to attempt to protect yourself to whatever degree than it is to leave your skin exposed. Free radicals, whether they are UV rays, cigarette smoke, or pollution are very damaging to our skin, and protecting your skin naturally makes sense. But be sure to understand what you are going to receive from an anti oxidant, protection, not the removal of existing wrinkles. They may work, they may not, but it’s hard to argue with a theory of preventing damage to your skin, especially when the outcome can be wrinkled and spotted skin.
